Morning launch window – early start

The Chiemgau's flying area for early starters: with the Hochfelln, the Chiemsee / Chiemgau tandem-flight region offers a site steeped in paragliding history. Among the pros of the paragliding scene, the Hochfelln near Bergen has always been the first choice for long cross-country flights with good thermals. But you have to get up early – the "launch window", the ideal time to take off, is always very small.

For tandem flying too, we're on this mountain relatively early. The reason for the morning flights is the Hochfelln's east-facing launch slope: the very first rays of sun heat the rocks and meadows around the summit. It's also the right mountain in easterly winds.

The hiking country in the Hochfelln flying area

The flight covers a long stretch above the branching network of hiking trails back down to Bergen am Chiemsee – we descend 1,200 metres while enjoying the morning sun under the glider. The trails in the Hochfelln area get especially interesting and varied above the cable car's middle station: you're out of the forest and can see the rocks of the Hochfelln summit.

On good days the view of Lake Chiemsee is beautiful – and the panorama into the mountains is there even with plenty of cloud in the sky.

The Hochfelln in autumn

In autumn, the Hochfelln summit and above all the almost five-kilometre stretch of mixed forest down to the village of Bergen are a paradise of colour for photographers. The deciduous forest shimmers in bright colours as we descend in one long glide – our colourful tandem wings match perfectly. Loveliest of all flown close together as a couples' flight.

The autumn air is often especially clear, and Lake Chiemsee lies calm and windless far ahead of us. Autumn tandem flights at the Hochfelln – a very special experience.
